Please read the advice below relevant to your treatment(s). Please note, the advice is not a substitute for the advice of a medical professional, but merely guidance to help you get the best from your treatment(s).

Typical questions people asks us at Christine James Beauty Salon about having a sunless (fake) tan application. Contact our Ivybridge salon if you wish to know more or to book an appointment.

How does fake tan work?

Sunless tanner contains a special substance called DHA, which reacts with the air and the amino acids on the surface of the skin, causing the cells on the surface of the skin to darken.

Is sunless tanner safe?

Yes, fake tan is completely safe to use. DHA is non-toxic and works by browning the top layer of the skin known as the epidermis; no self-tanner is absorbed deeper into the skin. However, we advise an optional small patch test before the treatment to ensure you are not allergic to any of the product ingredients.

How should I prepare?

You should shave or wax at least one day before your treatment to reduce the risk of streaks and patches of colour from appearing on the skin. Use a gentle exfoliator to remove any dead skin cells to create a smooth base ready for the application of the Sienna X product. Avoid using deodorant, perfume and moisturiser on the day of your treatment to ensure that the fake tan can adhere successfully to your skin.

How long does a sunless tan last?

A professional tan can last for more than a week if cared for properly with a regular moisturising routine. Moisturise your skin every day to hydrate the skin and prevent colour from flaking away.

How can I help my tan last longer?

Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise some more! As this helps to lock-in your colour nourishes your skin, helping it to look healthy, youthful and attractive. While there is no need to avoid the sea or swimming pools, do steer away from spending long periods of time swimming in the sea or pools to reduce the speed at which your tan fades (high salt levels or pool chemicals). To help extend the life of your tan sell a range of specialist aftercare products.

How often should I go for tan top-up?

An expertly applied fake tan can last well into a week and will then gradually lighten as the days go on with the colour will fade off evenly and gently over the passage of time. It’s your choice how often you come back for another tan – you may opt for a monthly treatment, book a session weekly or simply visit our salon for tanning for special occasions.

How long does the tanning process take?

The Sienna X express tan is a rub-in system applied to the entire body. The entire process takes one hour in total. The guide colour application is removed leaving you with tanned skin, dry, oil and streak free without the risk accidental colour transfer staining. You can even shower straight away! After the application, the colour will continue to darken for approximately 4 hours.

Can a spray tan help me look slimmer?

Yes, indeed it can! Applying a darker shade of fake tan to the sides of the torso, arms, legs and chest creates the illusion of a slimmer physique. No hard work, no sweat and no visits to the gym. Although fake tan won’t have an effect on the scales ☹ it does provide a super-quick way to look leaner, toned and fitter in just a few minutes.

How dark will my fake tan go?

This depends on your colour choice. We will discuss the colour options with to choose a colour that suits your skin tone best. Sienna X provides a gentle but noticeable golden glow to the skin. Darker tanning colours are available for people who want to achieve a more burnished finish or a caramel hue to the skin.

Does fake tan cover stretch marks?

Yes, a sunless tanner will camouflage stretch marks, blemishes and light scars. The solution can hide imperfections and even out the skin tone. Adding a bronzer, foundation or concealer can further boost the effects too. Again, we can discuss the best option with you.
